Installing splack-current

Versionssplack-current does not yet have a working installer.
Here is a hack to install splack-current on machines which are supported by the 2.2.20 kernel used by splack-8.0
This will not work for newer machines such as the SunBlade and SunFire series.
First install splack-8.0, you only need the a and n series packages.

Make a directory for splack-current and download splack-current from a suitable mirror. You could also use an NFS mount if you have a copy on another machine.

cd splack-current/splack/a
installpkg glibcsolibs (You MUST do this first)
installpkg sed
installpkg pkgtools

upgradepkg *.tgz
silo

Now you can cd ../n and upgrade the network packages
Then install any other packages from other sets.

Finally reboot and download kernel sources 2.4.27, compile, make, and enjoy.
2.4.27 works on everything except Sun4D SMP, I have patches to fix this.

Oh, wow. The kernel works again with non-sun4u machines now? That's awesome. Last time I tried a 2.4 series, it failed miserably.

Seems like there used to be major SPARC-specific bit-rot in both the kernel and in glibc. Are things finally starting to turn around? I must admit, I haven't been keeping up with the ChangeLogs for either project in the last several months.

Warning! READ: Hostname set from packages will be modified. Root password will be reset to nothing. OpenSSL will mismatch the version OpenSSH is built with making it useless. The Inet1 rc script and modules.conf will not load modules and initialize interface like before, they must be reconfigured. A note to all: move OpenSSH and OpenSSL out of the a/ directory, recompile both from source. If you fail to follow these instructions, you will not be able to use many OpenSSL based programs or OpenSSH. Recompile both packages from source or leave it alone.
